Baltic Conferences on Intellectual Cooperation: a retrospective
The biennial Conferences on intellectual cooperation held over the past 15 years sustain a pre-war tradition (1935-1940) of bringing together intellectuals from the Baltic Sea region to discuss common issues. The 1st Baltic Congress on Intellectual Cooperation took place in Kaunas (1935), and subsequently these events were held on an annual basis with participation of university academics, scientists, public figures (ex-ministers, ambassadors) and politicians. The tradition of the Intellectual conferences was revived in 1999 by the 7th Baltic Conference on Intellectual Cooperation (BCIC) held in Riga. Since then these conferences have been organised by the Estonian, Latvian , Lithuanian Academies of Sciences and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.
What deserves a special mention is an initiative undertaken by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences nine years in advance of the 7th BCIC. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, arranged for a meeting on June 26-28, 1990 in Tallinn with the representatives of the academies of the three Baltic States for the purpose of establishing a closer contacts. On 28 June 1990, The Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian Academies of Sciences issued a communiqué on cooperation if the three academies of sciences noting the important role played by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in fostering this process. It was then decided that the Academies would initiate and encourage scientific collaboration, with particular emphasis on environmental research.
Since the revival of the Baltic Conferences on Intellectual Cooperation, conference themes have sought to address the following issues:
13th BCIC (Tallinn, January 2013) - European Research Area and Small Countries;
12th BCIC (Vilnius, November 2010) - Science and Society;
11th BCIC (Riga, October 2007) - National Development Strategies of the Baltic States;
10th BCIC (Helsinki, 2005) - The Baltic: Past, Present and Future". History and politics, the Baltic Sea as a body of water and scientific collaboration around the Baltic Sea;
9th BCIC (Vilnius, June 2003) - Globalization, Europe and National Identity, with considerable attention paid to science and culture of small countries;
8th BCIC (Tallinn, June 2001) - the historical experience of the Baltic States, research strategies in small countries, and the humanities during the past decade;
7th BCIC (Riga, 1999) - the history of and future prospects of mutual cooperation of Baltic States with particular focus on the protection of intellectual values and science.
The main purpose of these conferences is to promote intellectual and scientific, in particular, cooperation around the Baltic Sea, to better comprehend the issues of common history, culture, economic and political situations and to give impetus for joint efforts in tackling current challenges.
